Last weekend, we had the pleasure of a visit from Sue, Michael, and Verl. This also helped attract Nicole, Owen, and Flynn to our house.

In the last approximately year and 1/2 since Verl and Flynn were born, I’ve re-learned a lot about kids from the early ages. One thing I’ve learned is that babies and toddlers are not real chummy people with other kids. They don’t really understand sharing, they don’t really understand that they are able to hurt people. They also don’t really understand that they can not hurt people if they want to :). It’s not their fault; they’re learning a lot at an incredible rate, and they can’t get it all at once.

At any rate, previous experiences of hanging out with Verl and Flynn with each other or with other kids have required a lot of adult intervention for the repeated incidents of toy grabbing, hitting, scratching, knocking over, screaming, etc. I’m used to it and kind of take it for granted.

So it was really incredible this last weekend to see Flynn and Verl suddenly look at each other with new eyes! They were shy, they walked over to each other to give each other toys and other things, they hugged each other, they shared laps and laughed at the same things. It was almost like they had a crush on each other :). I hope we get to see a bunch more of the two of them together in the future.

We also got to experience a hilarious development in Flynn’s skills. We have a bunch of water squirters around to spray at Sage in case she starts scratching the furniture (not that we ever get to them in time.) It turns out that Flynn can now pull the trigger on a water squirter. He picked up a water squirter, and all on his own, he figured out that it could be used to squirt people with. However, he DIDN’T figure out that the squirter has to be facing OUT in order to squirt the other person. In fact, he seemed to think just the opposite. So this led to repeated rounds of:

  1. Flynn runs towards someone in the circle, hollering with delight, while pulling the trigger.
  2. Flynn gets squirted in the face with water.
  3. Flynn looks confused and wipes off his face with his sleeve.
  4. A moment pause.
  5. Repeat.

Never once did he turn the squirter around :). I didn’t get a very good movie. Here’s the best I could do, but it really doesn’t capture the hilarity of the event.
